The Tale of Tsar Saltan-Сказка о царе Салтане(with English subtitles) 1/6

The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of His Son the Renowned and Mighty Bogatyr Prince Gvidon Saltanovich, and of the Beautiful Princess-Swan is an 1831 poem by Aleksandr Pushkin, written after the Russian fairy tale.

The story is of three sisters, of whom the youngest is chosen by Tsar Saltan (Saltán) to be his wife, while he makes the other two his royal cook and royal weaver. They are jealous, of course, and when the tsaritsa gives birth to a son, Prince Gvidon (Gvidón), they arrange to have her and her child sealed up in a barrel and thrown into the sea. The sea itself takes pity on them, and they are cast up on the shore of a remote island, Buyan. The son, having quickly grown while in the barrel, goes hunting. He ends up saving an enchanted swan from a kite. The swan creates a city for Prince Gvidon to rule, but he is homesick, and the swan turns him into a mosquito. In this guise, he visits Tsar Saltan's court, where he stings his aunt's eye and escapes.

Back in his distant realm, the swan gives Gvidon a magical squirrel. But he continues to pine for home, so the swan transforms him into a fly, and in the Tsar's court he stings the eye of his other aunt. In a third round he becomes a bumblebee and stings the nose of his grandmother. In the end, he expresses a desire for a bride instead of his old home, upon which the swan is revealed to be a beautiful princess, whom he marries. He is visited by the Tsar, who is overjoyed to find his wife and newly-married son.

In the same land, there lived a lad named Ivan. He fell in love with Nastenka, but, unfortunately, he bragged too much, and was turned for that into a bear by a forest magician. Quiet Flows the Don.

Quiet Flows the Don. Reloading
The first movie - in 1931. Historical background: the years 1930-31 - the years of "great change", complete collectivization and liquidation of the kulaks as a class.
The second film adaptation - 1955-1958 years. Historical background: the death of Stalin, the processes of liberalization in domestic and foreign policy of the USSR, the beginning of the "Khrushchev thaw".
The third screen version: - 1990-1992. Historical background: The Declaration of Independence of Russia, political chaos, reform.

Who filmed "The Quiet Don '?
In 1931, when they were known only to the first two completed books of the novel, directed by Olga Preobrazhenskaya and Ivan took off right on your scenario, a silent version of "Quiet Flows the Don". The author of the novel, Mikhail Sholokhov personally advised the writers. In the picture accented relationships Gregory and Axinya, played out a painful, forbidden love, which struck the fatal circumstances.
The film was a difficult path to the viewer - now trying not to let the screens, "the verdict was:" Cossack adultery, "" admiration of life of the Cossacks, "" non-class and lack of support for the revolution. "
In January 1930, Mikhail Sholokhov wrote to the actress Emma Cesarsky:
"As for the" Quiet Flows the Don "and the fact that I allegedly contributed to or was happy it was banned - nonsense!" Until such heights "diplomacy" I have not yet arrived. Of course, I'll come, and, of course, I will do my best, and possible to "Don" went on the screen. But you know, I can not believe all these rumors, I think, is another innuendo Moscow bitches sons and daughters. Well, to hell with them! "
After the release of "Quiet Flows the Don" directors were expelled from the Association of Revolutionary Cinematography with the wording "for the indulgence of petty-bourgeois tastes of the class of alien visitors."

In 1939 the film director Sergei Gerasimov appealed to the University of Physical Culture with a proposal to film the novel "And Quiet Flows the Don". Of course, was refused - after 1938 it became apparent a growing estrangement from the leader of Sholokhov, as well as Stalin from him. And although in 1941, Sholokhov was awarded the Stalin Prize for "The Quiet Don" in 1939 will be an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and even earlier, in 1937, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, distance, moving away from Sholokhov Stalin and the Central Committee, has increased steadily. It is not surprising that the leadership of University of Physical Culture has not seen fit to film the novel disgraced writer.
"I was told - the director later recalled - that hardly makes sense to film the novel, which for all its virtues puts a premium on the fate of Gregory Melekhov, a man without a road, in fact, doomed to history."
In 1956, Sergei Gerasimov, decided it was finally time to implement a creative idea. After the death of IV Stalin began the process of liberation from the legacy of a totalitarian regime and made possible adaptation of the "dangerous" novel ("The Quiet Don" were afraid to republish until Stalin's death).
Script producer approved himself Sholokhov Gerasimov and began work on a three-part color film. "Each new generation has been to comprehend the novel in all its depth and volume, did not simplify any character, nor in the conflicts and problems - we have figured Gerasimov. - The fact that in the mid-50's did not need to say to defend against the charges of Sholokhov that his Melekhov - is "gamletianstvuyuschy Cossack," "Don Hamlet" does not obviate the question "Who is he, Grigory Melekhov?"
Filming began in August 1956 in the halls of the studio, and in early October, the film crew went on an expedition. Scenery "Tatar village" built in the same place where they filmed the first, "silent" version of "Quiet Flows the Don" - on the territory of the village Dichensk. At 3 km from Dichenska "built" estate Listnitsky.
In September 1957 the assembly of the film. Sergei Gerasimov trying to time the output of the first two series of the 40 th anniversary of the Great October Revolution. And it did - the film was released in November 1957, and six months later, in 1958, on the screens of the country came third series of "Quiet Flows the Don".
At the box office 1958 film grossed 47 million viewers, placing first.
Painting was awarded the prize "Crystal Globe at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary in 1958. In the same year at the International show of festival films in Mexico, tape received the diploma for an epic highly artistic form of expression of people's tragedy, for the wonderful artistic ensemble and high-quality color.

The idea of the movie "The Quiet Don" came from Sergei Bondarchuk, as he said after a meeting with Mikhail Sholokhov - writer, director, admitted that unhappy with the film version of "Quiet Flows the Don", created by Sergei Gerasimov, and dreams of another film adaptation of his novel.
From the memoirs of IK Skobtseva:
"The start is all wrong. Sergei F. Sholokhov come to for advice when going to shoot" War and Peace. "Sholokhov was surprised:" What are you! Four volumes even raise difficult. How are you going to shoot it? "And in these conversations Sholokhov constantly blurts out that he would like to see a new, more complete, the screen version of" Quiet Flows the Don. "It turns out that the adaptation Gerasimov he was not very happy." It was the mid-60's, and several years later, in 1975 in the journal "Soviet Screen" (№ 11), in an article by Alexander Lipkova "canceled a long, long movie, it was mentioned that the plan is television - shooting 13 episodes "Quiet Flows the Don" (directed by S. Bondarchuk).

From the memoirs of Eugene Samoilov:
"I was present at the conversation Sergei Fyodorovich with his teacher - Sergei Gerasimov Apollinarievich. Bondarchuk said then that he wanted to shoot" Quiet Flows the Don. "And you know how to answer Gerasimov?
- Let me die in peace, Serge, and then take off the way you think.
When life Gerasimov for "Pacific Don Sergei Bondarchuk has not begun."

Since the beginning of perestroika have hope to carry out long-bred concept movie "Quiet Flows the Don", especially since the Goskino supported this idea.

From an article by Valery Tikhomirov (Gazeta Molot 2004):
"1986. Puhlyakovsky farm. The Don celebrated the 70 anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Russian writer Anatoly Kalinin. Together with well-known Moscow actors, writers, journalists at the farm one of the first arrivals and Sergei Fedorovich Bondarchuk. I ask him to write a" book reviews " their impression of the exhibition. He willingly sits behind a small table, opens the "Book" and wrote kind and heartfelt words. Sergei Bondarchuk frankly happy to see fellow countrymen, and the question about his new plan, known to us - film "Quiet Flows the Don" by Mikhail Sholokhov firmly replied: "Work started, the movie certainly will ..."

From the memoirs of Olga Kabo (graduated Cinematography in 1989, the rate of S. Bondarchuk and I. Skobtseva):
"Over time we realized that our course Sergey Fedorovich picked up on the characters' Quiet Flows the Don." We had our own Gregory Melekhov, Natalia, and Daria, and Listnitsky. Maybe he gained us then to force the course to make a movie? "He is burned, then raved, "Quiet Don." All four years of study, we prepared extracts from the novel, tries his way ... Finally, Sergei F. executed with a "Quiet Don" for us, almost of its graduates have done auditions. I auditioned for Aksinia paired with Roma Grekov (God rest his soul!), he was like Grisha Melehova. Alas, all samples and confined. But the fact that we played before the movie camera Sholokhov heroes - too little reason for pride. "

From an interview with IK Skbotsevoy:
"In the early 1990's. Was a preliminary agreement with the Broadcaster. Sergey Fedorovich sat down to write the script for the series - the first 19 episodes, then 15, then reduced to 13. I wrote it without the money of the contract. Sergey Fedorovich was ready to shoot. But funds for this No one stands out - a wave of universal "perestroika", and Sergei F. found himself in disgrace. " In practice, this meant only one thing - the lack of public funding for the filming of "Quiet Flows the Don".

But the solution was found - with the assistance director Ali Khamrayev, filming "Tamerlane" in co-production with Italy, the cooperation offered Bondarchuk Italian producers Giuseppe Colombo and Rispoli. In January 1990, Studio Time, which was led by Bondarchuk, has signed a contract with the Italian company "International Cinema Company", from the person who spoke Rispoli, production desyatiseriynoy TV version and a five-hour film version of the novel "And Quiet Flows the Don". One of the main conditions of the agreement was part of foreign stars that can provide wide distribution in the West (the role of Gregory Melehova invited Rupert Everett, the role of Axinya - Delphine Forest, on the role Pantelei - F. Murray Abraham). Filming took place in Russia - with "Mosfilm" was contracted to provide technical services.
On themselves shooting took less than a year (even in the days of the August putsch shooting had not been stopped). August 10, 1992 Bondarchuk concluded filming in Russia, and then left for Rome to mount and to voice the film.

From the memories of Ali Khamrayeva:
"They Irina Konstantinova lived in a posh expensive hotel - in the heart of Rome. Suddenly, on" Quiet Flows the Don "develop complications, the whole project is blocked, the Italians ran out of money, went to some endless disputes ... Bondarchuk month sitting, two sitting, work is not goes, installation stopped, and he that his luxurious residence dubbed as the well-known Moscow jail - "Sailor's Silence"!
I did see stuff "Quiet Flows the Don". Sergei F. mounted on studio Cinecitta "and once said:" Come to the assembly, I'll show you something. " Sergey Fedorovich showed me amazing shot episode. It is a scene in the stables, where sprightly Daria (Natalia Andreichenko) seduces an old man Melehova (Murray Abraham). Hot scene, crazy, flesh, but no vulgarity. And showed me the battle scenes: powerfully done as soon as he could Bondarchuk. Quiet Flows the Don "because no one else and will never lift."

Began a long exhausting litigation between Cinema Concern Mosfilm, "time" and by association, "Rebirth". "International Cinema Company" under the contract had to pay a "Time" for the organization of filming a few million dollars, then, with the beginning of "shock therapy" "Revival" was to demand pay for their services is already "in stock prices."
In 1993, when Bondarchuk again turned to Rispoli asking for funds to complete the installation and sound, the producer has expressed great surprise that all tempered by the contract funds had already ended. The film is, costing at most a rough estimate, 10 million dollars, was timed for Christmas 1993. However, the producer took the footage to London. Bondarchuk's desperate attempts to negotiate with Rispoli not have had success. The director is dead, and not waiting for the release of "Quiet Flows the Don" on the screens.

More than ten years the family of Sergei Bondarchuk's attempted return to Russia the film "The Quiet Don". After lengthy negotiations in 2005, Channel bought the Italians 460 boxes of film, but without a voice.
Son of director Fyodor Bondarchuk, took up the challenging job: from "working material" father collect desyatiseriyny film, which first channel is going to show viewers in 2006.
From an interview with Fyodor Bondarchuk:
Quiet Flows the Don "is now preparing to enter the" Channel ". Above picture is a colossal work, because it was made his father in a rough cut. All ten of the film series mount myself, but it helps me a producer Faziev Janik, director of "Turkish Gambit". An additional complication is that the English-language film and has to impose the Russian text.
By the way, to the output of paintings on the Russian screen is treated with extreme seriousness - are invited sholohovedy, serious people who can get to the point. "

Humphrey Bogart stars as one of five disreputable adventurers who are trying to get uranium out of East Africa. Bogart's associates include pompous fraud Robert Morley, and Peter Lorre as the German-accented "O'Hara", whose wartime record is forever a source of speculation and suspicion. Becoming involved in Bogart's machinations are a prim British married couple (Edward Underdown and blonde-wigged Jennifer Jones). As a climax to their many misadventures and double-crosses, the uranium seekers end up facing extermination by an Arab firing squad. The satirical nature of Beat the Devil eluded many moviegoers in 1953, and the film was a failure. The fact that the picture attained cult status in lesser years failed to impress its star Humphrey Bogart, who could only remember that he lost a considerable chunk of his own money when he became involved in the project. Peter Viernick worked on the script on an uncredited basis. Beat the Devil eventually fell into public domain, leading to numerous inferior editions by second and third-tiered labels.

Staging Fights

Staging Fights

Fighting in the movies, to the modern viewer, the phenomenon is already familiar. But it was not always! On the history of the formation of film-fighting and the secrets of this skill Kaltahchyan says Alexander.

Stuntmen and film fighting.

Fighting in the faked film begins with the most simple. One man, according to the scenario, an attempt on another person and it is necessary to remove a realistic, safe for the actors or stuntmen. Make it simple enough. The principle of overlap. In the arrangement of battles for the movie, he is one of the key. The essence of the trick is that the batter covers are not an existing contact point of the camera, and his partner mimics getting hit in the goal (acting out). As a result we are seeing on the screen "real impact". Or just a camera put up at such an angle that see a gap with this angle is not possible and the illusion of stroke.
The first westerns and films in the genre thriller are limited to. Typically, a pair of sweeping attacks on the person and the bad guy falls. Crown was the good guy after the exchange of punches to put his hand to block enemy attack and put his finishing. Had not yet been filmed when the protagonist was a carrier of martial arts, and requirements for special effects, photography and sculpture of the movement were significantly lower.
The first fighters in the genre of kung fu created a furor. People went to them to look at "foreign fighters" doing incredible things. And frankly, even a weak script is not satisfactory. In the movie, need people who own arts, technology falls, the spectacular after-game and strikes. These were the first professional stunt specializing in martial arts.
Their task was to replace the actor during the performance particularly difficult tricks of wrestling and make entertaining roleplaying. It's one thing to fall from the punch (although it requires skill and training), and quite another to depart from the side kick superman, incidentally after breaking a wall. It is this trick performed the stunt man Jackie Chan (a not-yet little-known) in the Bruce Lee movies. Such things require not only the physical training of the singer, and a special special effect equipment, coordinated activities throughout the Stunt Team.
The main task of stuntmen on the set is not just a trick to make clean, and prepare and implement it in accordance with the director intended.
At the moment in martial arts movies are in a very wide range, and the martial arts and related tricks only complement the image of a hero. Virtually every action movie hero or a TV series has some martial arts or simply enter into melee. Professional work and stunt skills to help him look like the most convincing in her role and make it work safe.
Cinema is not a circus and not a sport. Here, from a person not want to show the maximum fitness. And, nevertheless, can stunt show on the screen such that in real life just is not possible. How does this happen? To the aid of such things as illusions, using special equipment, pyrotechnics, knowledge of the shooting and related developments, acting. Subsequently, we add to this installation, computer graphics, which greatly enhance the effect.
To prepare for a movie stunt fights use special training. This includes, for both theoretical knowledge and practical training in the gym, often using the camera for the development of the sense and ability to work on it. Both have their own, sharpened by a movie-specific. For example, a specialist in martial arts should be able to look in a frame or to prepare the actor as special forces to capture the offender, or as a karateka, boxers, judo, etc. The mass of options and you never know what may be needed in next time. To master so many styles in real life is difficult ... But in the movie is real. Enough to understand the stylistic features and know the basic movements (they are not a lot) that are common to all types of martial arts, which are determined by human biomechanics and the same for all people.
In practice, the process of preparing to film tricks fights usually looks like.
According to the scenario and the wishes of the director is determined by the style of warfare, the nature of the characters and especially the fight, created storyboards.
This is followed by preparation of draft of the duel and its demonstration in the performance of stunt. If it is accepted, the final version rehearsed before the entire fight without stopping.
On-set fight scene is built under

White Bim the Black Ear (1977) (English subtitles)

White Bim the Black Ear (1977) (English subtitles). Part 2/2.

This is a touching story about a hunting dog, faithfully devoted to his master, an elderly writer. The war veteran Ivan Ivanovich got very sick one day (his wartime wounds had never healed). He lived alone and had no one in the world but his loyal Bim. After Ivan Ivanovich was taken to hospital, the dog had to be moved from one house to another, to live in the families of strangers. Bim experienced a lot of suffering, for he had never known the whole truth about human nature. But among a lot of different people that Bim encountered and who tried to possibly help him, there were good Samaritans, too. Almost as good as his master...
It's one of those films you only have to see once to have every frame instilled in your heart forever.

The film is based on the science-fiction novel "A Picnic on the Roadside" by Russian sci-fi writers, the brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Heart of a Dog (1988) (English subtitles)

heart of a Dog (1988) (English subtitles)
Heart of a Dog is a black-and-white Soviet two series movie based on Mikhail Bulgakov's story "Heart of a Dog", filmed in 1988. Movie is filmed as black-and-white to give a feeling of an old film: it is set in Moscow not long after the October revolution. It features Professor Filip Filippovich Preobrazhensky who implants a human pituitary gland and testicles into a stray dog named Sharik. Sharik proceeds to become more and more human as time passes, picks for himself the name Poligraf Poligrafovich Sharikov, makes himself a career with the "Moscow Cleansing Department responsible for eliminating vagrant quadrupeds (cats, etc.)", and turns the life in the professor's house into a nightmare until the professor reverses the procedure. The main question is "Is anybody who is looking like a man is A REAL MAN?"
